The artefact!

So after gluing it all together it turned out great!

I was really happy with the outcome and amazed at how the kiwi looked, floating and in 3D. As I picked it up and looked around I could see the kiwi from all sides and the illusion was fantastic!

I will need to take more photos and put into my final conference and documentation posters.

Laser Cutting

So I created a template on Illustrator with the my chosen bird which is the kiwi in a square so to keep consistency and I added small boxes in the file to engrave on the edges to keep a secure place where I could glue the squares into place to connect the entire artefact.

So each layer I would engrave twice except the centre.

At laser cutting they also gave me an option of fill which would fill in the rea of the kiwi’s body (third photo) but I think the illusion would not have come through as well so I stuck with just the contour outlines.

The results was looking great!

3D trial

So I tried my concept with clear OHP paper to see how it would work.

Laurent brought in one of the Masters students project which was similar to what I was trying to achieve and I was positive about it.

Richard Carthew was the student.

So I thought about how I would layer it and connect it. I decided to use acrylics as it would be easier to work with at the 3D lab

Transformation – 3D

So I started to explore different mediums and what I could do for my 3D artifact. I really wanted to try working with glass. I was searching around online and came across glass art. I really liked the idea of layered glass and thought it would work really well with my concept to turn my 2D drawing to 3D. The contour lines when layered would create an illusion of the 3D animal.

Final Integration

So I continued the idea of the yin-yang and decided to put the kiwi inside the penguin’s contours looking like it’s wings but still keeping the scale and correct proportions. I think it worked out quite well as they both integrated without appearing like a new creature and using the contour lines system.

Integration

The two birds that I chose were the Penguin and the Kiwi to integrate. So I tried various ways on Illustrator. I thought about placing the contours together and interconnecting them somehow. After a few attempts I thought about the yin-yang and how I could use that idea to integrate my birds.
